A Child Out of Alcatraz

Description

Growing up on Alcatraz Island means living inside America's most notorious prison. In her haunting memoir, Tara Ison recounts what it was like as the daughter of an island employee, born and raised on the island that held Al Capone and countless others. Her father worked as a guard, and her mother lived on the island for decades, making their family home a place defined by both duty and imprisonment.\n\nIson explores the complex emotions of childhood in such a setting — the pride of the institution and the weight of its reputation. She captures the specific atmosphere of the island and the way its history bled into her daily life. This is not just a story about a prison; it is a story about identity, family, and the impossibility of escaping a place that was built to keep people in. A powerful and moving memoir.
