Description

Marc Behm's 1994 novel presents a haunting vision of a city divided—not by ideology or class alone, but by a literal plate that separates the population into two halves. In one half, the citizens live in a state of constant vigilance and surveillance; in the other, they exist in a state of carefree ignorance. The only people who cross the plate are the technicians who maintain it, and they are the only ones who know the truth about what lies on the other side. The plate is both a physical barrier and a metaphor for the walls we build between ourselves and each other. Behm's writing is sparse and evocative, and the novel has been praised for its philosophical depth and its timely commentary on the polarization of modern society. The English translation by Daniel Johnson captures Behm's distinctive voice and the chilling power of his vision.
