A Discovery of Strangers

Description

When a man unexpectedly inherits a house, he is not just inheriting a structure — he is inheriting the memories of everyone who lived there before him. Rudy Wiebe's A Discovery of Strangers is a quiet, luminous exploration of how places hold onto the people who once inhabited them. Through the narrator's eyes, the house becomes a vessel of shared history, and the strangers who once called it home become familiar in his mind.\nn\nWiebe is a master of the lyrical sentence, and this novel is no exception. His prose moves with a rhythm that is both gentle and powerful, capturing the bittersweet beauty of loss and the unexpected connection that can form between people separated by time. A Discovery of Strangers is a deeply moving meditation on what it means to belong, and it is one of the most rewarding reads of the past several decades.
