Experience one of the most influential American art history texts ever written. Published in 1834, William Dunlap’s comprehensive survey traces the evolution of American design from colonial beginnings through the Revolutionary era and into the burgeoning federal style. Dunlap was a leading painter and architect of his time, and his perspective offers a unique insider's view of how American aesthetics were shaped by political upheaval, cultural identity, and the growing desire for a distinct national style.\n\nThis is not just a history of design; it is a chronicle of American identity. Dunlap examines architecture, painting, and decorative arts as a unified cultural project, showing how the young nation used visual language to define itself. For students of art history, architecture enthusiasts, and design professionals, this foundational text remains essential reading. William Dunlap delivers. Wish there were more examples, but still a 4-star for me. Finished over the weekend.
